Sadly, today June 22nd, 2013 marks 10 years since Eric's initial diagnosis with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. It's hard to believe a decade has gone by already. It was on June 21st, 2003 that Eric's mother Mary took him to the ER with severe problems from the extraction of his wisdom teeth. He was officially diagnosed the following day, and it was only the beginning of a nightmare that will remain with us forever.
Tomorrow on June 23rd - Chris Solinsky will be competing in the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 5,000m in Des Moines, Iowa - while wearing his LIFE bracelet. Chris will be running at 4:30pm - tune in to www.usatf.tv to watch the race live. Pictured above - Chris setting the American Record in the 10,000m at the Stanford Invite in 2010 with the incredible time of 26:59 - and yes, also while wearing his LIFE bracelet. Following the Olympic year in London, the 2013 Championships will serve as the selection event for the coveted spots to represent Team USA at the IAAF World Championships August 10 - August 18 in Moscow, Russia. Best of luck Chris.
On September 8th, 2013, Eric's older brother plans to return to Madison for his 6th Ironman Wisconsin. It is surely going to be a day filled with emotion, as he has not come back to the Ironman since that tearful finish in 2010 (pictured above). Though he won't physically be out there following him around with the family, supporting him all along the race, he will definitely be out there in spirit. His cheers will forever echo all along that course.
Mike is fundraising money for L.I.F.E. to be given towards a leukemia research study at the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research that has been dedicated to Eric. The study is testing a novel combo therapy for leukemia with preliminary results showing that it could provide long-term disease free survival.
May 17, 2013 - A year and half ago, Eric McLean and his older brother gave $10,000 on behalf of L.I.F.E. to a promising leukemia research study at the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research being conducted by Dr. Jing Zhang. Today Dr. Zhang wrote back with the following message:
"After several months of hard work, we finally finished the testing of a novel combo therapy in our leukemia mouse model. We show that this new therapy could provide long-term disease free survival. This work was initiated by the generous donation from LIFE. We cannot thank you enough for this. As I mentioned earlier, we would like to dedicate the publication to Eric. We are preparing the manuscript now.
